Key Responsibilities of an HLTA
As an HLTA, you will:
Deliver whole-class learning activities under the direction of a qualified teacher
Support pupils with diverse needs, fostering independence and engagement
Assist in lesson planning, curriculum delivery, and pupil assessment
Manage classroom behaviour and implement individual behaviour plans
Collaborate with external agencies and support school trips and enrichment activities
Provide specialist support in areas such as speech therapy, literacy, or SEN
Mentor other support staff and contribute to staff development
What We're Looking For in an HLTA
HLTA qualification or equivalent (e.g. NVQ Level 3)
Minimum of 2 years' experience in a teaching or learning support role
Strong literacy and numeracy skills
Ability to work independently and manage whole-class responsibilities
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of the national curriculum and relevant learning strategies
Commitment to safeguarding and child protection
Ideal HLTA Candidates Will Also Demonstrate:
Confidence in managing challenging behaviour
Experience with IEPs and individual learning plans
Familiarity with ICT tools to support learning
A flexible, proactive, and team-oriented approach
A passion for inclusive education and pupil wellbeing
